Limesurvey

  feedbump 2012-07-19 LimeSurvey 2.0RC5 released

After almost two months since RC2 release the next (and hopefully last) release candidate is now available! Among dozen of bugfixes there have been two areas worked on intensely: The Central Participants database (many issues were fixed here and new features added) and the new RemoteControl2 API (based on JSON-RPC/XML-RPC). Please note that the coding of the RemoteControl API was exclusively sponsored by your donation money! Let us know if you think something is missing. We invite everyone to have a look at LimeSurvey 2.0 and ask you to report any issues back to us as soon as possible. Only that way it can quickly become stable for a full release.

Update: We are at RC7 now because we have been reported two show-stopper bugs. Thank you for the feedback!

ModX

feedbump 2012-06-29 Bacon Tacos, Unicorns and Creative Freedom

At MODX, we believe the tools and process of communicating on the web should be liberating, unencumbered by geeky assertions of how the web should work. We use “Creative Freedom” as our tagline, and over the coming days I want to share what creative freedom really means to us, and how it relates to everything we do.

Ryan's pet unicorn hard at work fetching bacon tacos

Quest for a Bacon-Taco-Fetching Unicorn

Nearly a decade ago, I began looking for a web content management system (CMS). In my search, I quickly became frustrated with complex theme systems, arbitrarily fixed content blocks, or being forced to use tables for markup when Cascading Style Sheets (CSS) and Web Standards were the future of the web.

As an experiment, I refactored osCommerce to output pages using lightweight, semantic markup styled just with CSS, forgoing the use of tables, sliced images and inline styles. This resulted in a ~30% speed boost, and I was sold. Faster sites meant better conversions, happier customers, and outperforming competing sites in search engine ranking, all things being equal.

Speed and SEO aside, I also needed a CMS I could hand over to non-technical clients without worrying about things breaking. If they were capable of filling out a form, they should be able to manage and publish content on the web.

We Built It, and for Once, They Actually Showed Up

Eventually, I gave up searching for a system that was as mythical as a bacon-taco-fetching pet unicorn. So, along with a few other like-minded individuals, we built one that gave us the creative freedom that was missing from the CMS landscape, and we happily shared it with the world.

We had no aspirations of becoming one of the leading open source CMS platforms used by hundreds of thousands of websites, but that’s where we find ourselves today. It took dozens of releases over 7+ years, but we’re happy about where we are now, and eager to share what’s in store.

Now, we’re on a mission to find new ways to give creative freedom to the people that work on the web.

PHP-Nuke

feedbump 2012-02-25 Using anchor text for positioning on web browsers
The anchor text (also known as link label or link text), is an important tool that you can use for positioning your site over others on the Web. This is because the logic says that if a website is quoted and mentioned in different places, it represents that its content is relevant to the topic that it is developing.

The web browsers use this logic in order to give the user the most accurate results. But is this correctly exploited for the bloggers and content writers? It seems that mainly it is not, because we can usually see anchor texts saying *Click here* as example, what is not related to the things that you are trying to position.

PHP-Fusion

  feedbump 2012-04-15 PHP-Fusion v7.02.05
Megjelent a PHP-Fusion v7.02.05 verziója, amely valószínűleg az utolsó v7.02-es verzió.

Ezúttal is hibajavításokra koncentrál a frissítés, melyekről listát itt találhattok: Roadmap.

Frissítés v7.02.04-ről v7.02.05-re (287 KB)
PHP-Fusion v7.02.05 (teljes) (5,6 MB)

Elég csak a frissítést letölteni, mivel abban is megtalálhatóak a szükséges fájlok.

Perhaps you would like your sNews CMS website to have more features than it comes with. Maybe you have some basic to intermediate XHTML, CSS and PHP skills... and you want to learn more and share your improvements. Good, because sNews is intentionally built as a developers' tool and it's an excellent learning toy for those who want to dig in and work with the code. sNews is not an average out-of-the-box product with a surplus set of things you won't need or use for your site, but is the base upon which to build the CMS that you want. A couple of notes before you start: - All the routines are nicely separated into several functions, and a beginner's knowledge level should be sufficient enough to understand what's really going on under the hood; - sNews is still the smallest publicly available CMS because we wanted to provide the core essentials required to produce and maintain dynamically managed website content; - As a minimum, the system requires PHP version 4.0 in order to cover the majority of server setups. Note - you are free to use later versions as well, but please make your coding backward compatible if you can; - The forum is a good place to start digging for answers not covered in our function reference FAQ.

feedbump 2009-05-02 EOL Announcement for MyBB 1.2 Series
MyBB 1.4 has been out for over 8 months. During this time we have had a security audit done and we believe that the 1.4 series is the safest yet. So upgrading should not worry you one bit.
When we first released 1.4 we only planned to continue support for 6 months but continued support due to the sizeable amount of people that still used the 1.2 series.

Support for the 1.2 series will end on June 1st, 2009 - making it 9 months of support after the release of the 1.4 series.
For those of you who are still operating boards with 1.2 we urge you to upgrade to the latest 1.4 release and seek help if needed before June 1st.

phpBB

  feedbump 2012-08-25 phpBB 3.0.11 released
Greetings community,

We are pleased to announce the release of phpBB "Bertie's long summer vacation" 3.0.11. This version is a maintenance release fixing a number of bugs and not adding any new features. We've improved compatability with PHP 5.4 further and added a warning about the minimum PHP version required to upgrade to phpBB 3.1 to warn users of old PHP installations.

We urge you to update your installation as soon as possible. Our support team will only support phpBB 3.0.11, updates to phpBB 3.0.11 and conversions to phpBB 3.0.11. Submissions to our trackers for older versions will not be accepted, please make sure you update before you submit a bug report.

If you use a language pack other than the default "English [GB]", you should check our downloads section, an update may already be available.

We would also like to say a special thank you to everyone outside the development team who has contributed a patch to this release:
Patrick Webster, Hari Sankar R, Michael Cullum, Dhruv Goel, Richard Foote, Senky, galaxyAbstractor, Adonais Romero González, Fyorl, Raimon, Bruno Ais, Callum Macrae, HTF, James King, Jan Schejbal, Oyabun1, RMcGirr83. You can find a full list of contributors on our redesigned Area51 development section: http://area51.phpbb.com/contributors.

For a complete list of changes with attributed ticket numbers, please consult our comprehensive changelog.

Installation instructions

A short explanation of how to do a conversion, installation or update is included within the provided INSTALL.html file, please be sure to read it. You can find a list of requirements on our Downloads page.

Security

If you find any security issues please report them to our security tracker.

Available packages

If you experience problems with the automatic update (white screens, timeouts, etc.) we recommend using the "changed files only" or "patch" method for updating.

  • Full Package:
Full phpBB 3 source code and english language files.
  • Automatic Update Package:
Update package for the automatic updater, contains changes from previous release to this release.
  • Changed Files Only:
Complete files, but only those that were changed since previous releases of phpBB 3. This archive contains changed files for every previous release.
  • Patch Files:
This file contains diffs against the previous phpBB 3 release, which can be applied with the patch utility.

Select the package most suitable for you. We recommend the following methods depending on your situation:

  • For new installations you should use the Full Package
  • For updates of boards without modifications you can use the Automatic Update Package (guided update) or the Changed Files Only package (manual update).
  • For updates of boards with modifications you should use the Automatic Update Package. If you are confident with patch files and patching you can use the Patch Files Package.
  • International Support Teams may use the Patch Package in conjunction with the Code Changes to better support users with problematic conflicts during their update process or to help them update code sections.
  • If you are a hoster/provider, you may want to use the Patch Files Package to update all of your client installations.

Please ensure you read the INSTALL and README documents in docs/ before proceeding with installation, updates or conversions!

Download Locations

The download is of course available on our downloads page.
Our release archive provides all packages we build. If you do not find your desired package you can probably find it in the release archive.

  feedbump 2012-08-16 phpBB goes green
Greetings all,

We are pleased to announce that in an effort to make your connection to the phpBB.com servers more secure, we have implemented SSL/TLS across our corner of the internet.

We are very grateful to the fine folks at DigiCert, who have graciously donated an Extended Validation Certificate for us to use on www.phpbb.com and a Wildcard SSL Certificate to secure the rest of our subdomains. If you are using a modern browser (and reading this announcement on www.phpbb.com), you should see a green address bar, denoting the secure connection. Other *.phpbb.com sites will display a lock.

To verify the details of the certificates, you can check out the seals below:
Image Image Image

Qualys Labs also has a nifty tool for analyzing SSL connection details:
Analyze phpBB Main (www.phpbb.com)
Analyze phpBB Area51 (area51.phpbb.com)
Analyze Google.com

Security is phpBB's top priority, and with this change, data sent between your browser and the phpBB.com servers will be encrypted to prevent access and tampering. Of course, SSL doesn't protect against everything, so we'll take this security-themed post as an opportunity to remind everyone to be diligent, use secure passwords, and only utilize computers that you're certain haven't been tampered with.

This has been rolled out to most areas of the site, however efforts are ongoing in several sections:
  • http://tracker.phpbb.com is still being tested, so it does not have SSL redirection in place yet.
  • Our team map requires moving to a newer version of the Google API, so that page will not be sent over HTTPS.
  • HTTPS is not forced on Area51's discussion board so that testing may be performed in both environments.

Offsite content on our discussion boards is being redirected to a Camo server through a template hook, so you should never see mixed content warnings while browsing any part of our sites. If you do, or find any other issues, please report them to our website bug tracker.

Once again, a great big hug to DigiCert for sponsoring this move.

You may discuss this in the discussion topic.

feedbump 2012-04-23 Google & phpBB Summer of Code Participants Announced
As we excitedly announced last month, phpBB is participating in Google Summer of Code 2012.

phpBB received a large number of fantastic proposals and we have had a blast getting to know some of the applicants over the past few weeks. Our mentors dedicated their utmost attention to carefully ranking the entries and filling the provided slots with proposals that we feel will have the greatest benefit for the phpBB community. We sincerely wish that we could accommodate every worthwhile proposal, however resources are limited and we are focusing on facilitating the best possible experience for our winners.

Without further adieu, it is my pleasure to announce our 2012 GSoC winners (In no particular order):

  • Search Backend Refactoring by Dhruv Goel, India
Dhruv will focus on enabling proper abstraction in the search system and allowing for individual backends to modify the user interface. He will also integrate Sphinx and PostgreSQL Fulltext search into the phpBB codebase.

  • Attachment Improvements by Kim Mantas, Hong Kong & UK
Kim will improve both the interface and functionality of the attachment system by implementing multiple file uploads, an improved user interface and a tool for downloading several attachments at once.

  • Auth Plugin Refactoring & User Integration by Joseph Warner, United States
Joseph will enable phpBB to simply integrate with third party authentication services. The generic interface will allow administrators to configure which services to accept or add additional services at a later time.

In addition to the slots provided by Google, phpBB will be extending the program by two additional slots. phpBB Summer of Code 2012 will follow much of the same guidelines set forth by GSoC. This year, both slots have been awarded to students on our own development team:

  • Closing RFCs Like a Boss by Joas Schilling, Germany
Joas will focus on completing some existing RFCs, including events, proper grouping for the teams page, improved ACP layout, soft delete, a log class, native php timezone handling, and others.

  • Post Revisions/Edit Log by David King, United States
David will implement a post revision system, enabling moderators to view detailed differences between edits made to a post with the ability to revert. This feature will have an option to be disabled, and can be further configured via the ACP to enable revision pruning.

If your proposal was not chosen, please accept our sincerest gratitude for your participation. Please do not feel discouraged to participate in the phpBB community regardless of GSoC as there are many opportunities to apply your skills.

Thank you,

The phpBB Team

If you want to add more languages, you need to update the code in forum.php (watch for those file names). Currently, de and en are available. If you create a long enough file for another language, please let me know. Warning: Translation file “common”, string “vericode~” has been updated in de and en (may lead to misunderstanding if not updated).   feedbump 2012-09-06 SQLite3 errors/warnings

I've very recently put up a PunBB 1.4 forum and, for simplicity's sake, I'm using SQLite3 as the database back end. (I'm running on a fairly limited VPS and trying to be as minimalist as possible.) I've noticed over the last 24 hours that I'm occasionally getting messages like this in the web server error logs:

FastCGI sent in stderr: "PHP message: PHP Warning: SQLite3::query(): Unable to prepare statement: 5, database is locked in /opt/nginx/sites/gc/include/dblayer/sqlite3.php on line 96" while reading response header from upstream

I know that SQLite3 locks the entire database when it's writing, but I'm wondering if this a sign of an actual problem I need to investigate, or if it's something that I can safely ignore -- is the query being retried so from the forum visitor's point of view everything is fine, or is data potentially being lost here? If I need to switch to a different database engine, I should think about it now, so I can follow up this message with "what's the best way to migrate between database engines." smile

  feedbump 2012-04-12 Spoiler add-on released
Searching our forums, you may discover that there already were some solutions suggested, but of the flimsy quality. As I suggested few years ago, by now I am considering the only simple and good way to make a text not straight visible to the reader, making it the same color as background where it's published on. Using the mouse, then it will be possible to highlight this block of text, and when the text is highlighted, it appears visible in white color on blue background in most browsers. ...

feedbump 2012-01-24 Premium add-ons are being updated for miniBB 3.0
These days I've started the work on updating all premium add-ons for the newest version of miniBB. Mostly, all changes will affect the layout and how it looks. However, some of the add-ons will also have new features added. In this thread, I will post about all updates gradually. At first, Checker and File Bank add-ons were updated, as they are the only premium add-ons present on miniBB support board. File Bank contains the new set of icons for the files list, $eeol setting for using...

  feedbump 2011-12-20 miniBB 3.0 is pre-released
As a little winter gift, here comes the first official release of miniBB 3, available for free download. What's new? The major additions to this release include the direct unsubscribing link in topic subscription emails (miniBB, again, tries to meet even more mailing requirements compatibility with that), improvements regarding standard-compatible email headers in all emails, updates regarding the version-for-mobile pack, super-sticky topics, whole forum navigation by pages, and other few bug...

feedbump 2011-10-17 Vimeo BB codes solution released
While working out the newer release of miniBB, I am also opened to the additions which are compatible with any version :) As always, sponsors and investors are welcome to suggest the new stuff for the community and sponsor it for fair prices. This time, under little patronage of Galmoer Audio Visual Design from Netherlands, we have shared another pieces of BB-code - for embedding Vimeo's sharing service videos. If I understand correctly, YouTube reminds a garbage can these days where you h...

Gallery

feedbump 2012-06-12 Gallery 3.0.4 Security Release Available!

After several extensive internal and external security audits which discovered 22 distinct vulnerabilities, we are releasing Gallery 3.0.4 as a security release. All of the issues require that someone with malicious intent either have an account with edit permissions, or trick a user with edit permissions into clicking on a malicious link. In most cases, this can only lead to a possible XSS vulnerability, but in several instances it allows arbitrary PHP code execution.

We thank the following individuals for reporting these issues: Chalk, Mateusz Goik, James 'albino' Kettle, Emanuel Bronshtein, and Sergey Markov. Due to their efforts, they will each be receiving bounties of $1000 for their help in making Gallery more secure. Read our Bounties page for details and how to submit any security issues you find.

We strongly recommend that all users of Gallery 3 upgrade as soon as possible.

We're releasing both Gallery 3.0.3 and Gallery 2.3.2 as security releases. Several researchers, working independently, discovered possible encryption-related vulnerabilities. Low-risk XSS vulnerabilities limited to the administration area were also reported. We thank the following individuals for reporting these issues: James 'albino' Kettle, George Argyros & Aggelos Kiayias, and Emanuel Bronshtein. They will be receiving bounties for these issues. Read our Bounties page for details and how to submit any security issues you find. The CVE id for these issues is CVE-2012-1113.

We recommend that all users of Gallery 2 and Gallery 3 upgrade as soon as possible.
